The Now: January 30, 2019

Welcome to the first edition of the The Now!

In this every other week feature, I will share what stories I'm following, shows I'm watching, food I'm cooking, projects I'm working on, and, really, anything else that has my attention at the moment.

Now Watching... Season three of The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime. The Husband and I are trying to finish it off before our hockey team come back from their bye week. It's a phenomenal show with astounding production values and fantastic acting. It also gets your mind thinking a lot about "what ifs."

Now Cooking... You already know about my recent adventures in making bread, but I also tried my hand at some easy vegan cooking. I've been wanting lots of vegetables lately but it's winter so I'm also craving soup. That lead me to make a huge pot of this winter lentil stew. It's tasty and warming and oh so good. It also made so much that I was able to freeze a dinner-for-two sized portion. The recipe, like many I make these days, is from Budget Bytes. (If you don't follow that blog, you really should.) Also, the buttermilk rolls and the stew go together perfectly.

Now Learning... How to improve my everyday handwriting. I'm slowly working my way through Boho Berry's self-paced Positive Scribes course. The videos are a touch slow for my liking, but I think the worksheets are a great resource.

Now Wearing... Lots of layers. The arctic vortex has descended on DC and I am wrapping up for my walks to work. I've never been more grateful for my extremely warm puffer coat. I like to bundle up about 15 minutes before I leave the indoors to create a heat bubble that lasts with me through the walk. It doesn't always work when it's this cold, but it does keep me warmer than if I didn't do it.

Now Working On... I'm about to wrap up a very lengthy SWOT analysis that I've developing for work. My library has never had an outreach librarian before, so I'm creating this analysis to learn about the library and how it fits within our University and also to serve as a starting point for upcoming projects. I'm also developing an exhibit for African American History Month. This year's theme is Great Migrations and I've learned a lot while gathering material and creating information cards.

Now Cleaning... The cabinet under our kitchen sink. We had a slow leak/seep in our faucet. To help our apartment building's maintenance crew, we emptied out everything in that cabinet. Doing so showed me just how icky it's gotten. As soon as the repairs are done, I am going to be attacking the area with cleaning products before organizing everything as it goes back in.

Now Prepping... For the Superbowl. Every year, The Husband and I host our friends. I make a HUGE vat (sometimes multiple vats) of chili along with cornbread and dessert. We serve it all up with the usual fixings and chips and dips. I've hosted some form of this party since college. It's a tradition I love and one that usually leaves my freezer stocked with leftover cornbread muffins that I get to nibble on later with butter and jam.
