First Sentence: There was a thing waiting in the darkness.
Summary: [From BN] Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she's at last returned to the empire-for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past. She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight. She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die just to see her again. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen's triumphant return. Celaena's epic journey has captured the hearts and imaginations of millions across the globe. This fourth volume will hold readers rapt as Celaena's story builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.
Thoughts: This series is starting to feel very Games of Thronesy to me. Well, not as many people die, but there are ton of characters with interweaving stories. Plus, there's a big ole baddie on the horizon with mystical powers and he wants to etch-sketch end the world.
This book takes the series deep in to the world building and mythology. Also, there's a lot of fighting. Shockingly, the romance between our leads is put off in a way that makes sense - although it's still driving me nuts that they're not "together." I mean, I get it, but it doesn't mean I don't hate the waiting.
What I liked most about this book is that it develops many of the secondary characters a whole lot more. Their stories and motivations are more fleshed out and it all integrates well within the overall structure of the novel. In the last book, I was a little annoyed when the story moved away from the main character. Now, I like spending time with these other figures. In some cases, their stories are more interesting and complex than Aelin's.
Rating: 7/10 [Very Good]
