Pairings: Soups On

Some books are just so charming that they leave you utterly delighted. The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo is one such book. This is the story of a mouse as he sets out to rescue a beautiful princess from some rats. This is a modern fairy tale with traditional moralistic and fantasy elements. It's also full of whimsy which keeps the book moving and helps it feel timeless.

One of the whimsical elements of this book is that soup is outlawed in the kingdom. The making of a pot of soup ends up being an important plot point in the story. I love soup! It's a warming and homey dish that can be made to suit any flavor. One of my favorite kinds of soup is tortellini soup. This recipe from Damn Delicious is a wonderful blend of flavors and textures. It combines chewy bites of pasta, fresh vegetables, and savory sausage. I suggesting grating on a dash of Parmesan for a delicious finish to your bowl.
