Andy Weir's The Martian is one of my favorite books. This "competency porn" tracks astronaut Mark Watney has he tries to survive, alone, on the red planet. Weir's writing is snappy and the plot moves quickly bouncing between Earth and Mars. Watney has to figure out how to survive on a planet hostile to humans. On his journey, he learns to farm, makes technology do more than it's meant to do, and handles the mental rigors of being the only person on a planet.
In honor of Watney's reliance on potatoes, I think we need to pair this book with a stuffed baked potato recipe. There are endless possibilities for this recipe, but I like this version from Tasty. It's a breakfast baked potato which is perfect for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or brinner. This recipe has protein from eggs, cheese, and bacon and freshness from a smattering of chopped chives. If you cook these just right, the yolk acts as a creamy sauce that soaks in to the potatoes. Noms. I'm getting hungry just writing this post.
