Pairings: Tis the Season

Tis the season to read Christmas books and yuletide tales. One of the classics you should pick up is Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. This story of a greedy bah-humbug turned changed man is the perfect story for the season. The book has been adapted to stage and screen and even by Muppets! The reason the story is beloved is because it's a heartwarming tale that reminds us of the point of the season.

Aside from being a great tale, Dickens writing evokes many memories and emotions in the reader. This book brings me back to high school. One of my friends was a burgeoning director so, for a few years, we put on a staged reading of this story in a local library. While our tale had to be abridged, we still shared the rich narrative full of sumptuous writing. One passage is decadent spread of words sharing a Christmas feast. Dickens covers all manner of meats and gravies, cheeses and breads, vegetables and fruits. Each sentence eliciting another image to savory. To this day, reading and recalling those pages makes me hungry. We can assuage that hunger by whipping up this cobbler recipe from Bon Apetit.
