Pairings: From the Sea

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell was one of my favorite books as a kid. So often we were assigned to read "young boy maturing on a mountain" kinds of texts. It was a nice change of pace to focus on a girl for once. This book is based on a true story and it discusses survival under extreme circumstances and through loneliness. Karana is a phenomenal character who uses her smarts and ingenuity to build shelter, find food, and persevere through tough times. This book is a classic and something I recommend to every reader.

Since the book takes place on an island, Karana hunts for most of her sustenance in the water. From abalone to octopus to fish, her bounty comes from the sea. I would pair a reading of this book with some grilled fish tacos. With this Cooking Classy recipe, you'll be able to get a taste of the meals that sustained our heroine.
