FIRST SENTENCE: It's funny what you hold on to, the things you remember when everything ends.

SUMMARY: [From BN] Kahlen is a Siren, bound to serve the Ocean by luring humans to watery graves with her voice, which is deadly to any human who hears it. Akinli is human—a kind, handsome boy who's everything Kahlen ever dreamed of. Falling in love puts them both in danger . . . but Kahlen can't bear to stay away. Will she risk everything to follow her heart?

THOUGHTS: I really liked Cass' The Selection series, but I loved this story. It's modern enough to feel relatable, but uses such an old myth that it feels timeless. The writing is wonderfully detailed and emotional. The way Cass describes The Ocean as mother is simply masterful. She feels like any mother would - loving, encouraging, and caring, but also stern. The scenes between The Ocean and Kahlen are my favorite. There is a strong bond between the characters and the writing is just beautiful. This book feels cinematic in it's telling. Cass uses vivid imagery and her imagination leaps off the page.

The only sort of clunker is this book is just how eager Akinli seems. It's a bit of a clunker in an otherwise elegant, modern fairytale.

RATING: 8/10 [Terrific]
