Variations on a Theme: Spring Cleaning

I missed updating Variations on a Theme last week because I was expecting guests for Easter. That meant I spent many hours over a few days making sure that the apartment was sparkly clean. So, no Variations because I was scouring my tub. Luckily, the cleaning fumes inspired March's (delayed) Variations on a Theme.

Is there ever a week when cleaning isn't atop your (loathe) to-do list? Within hours of disinfecting the kitchen countertops, they're inevitably glazed with Popsicle drippings or splattered with olive oil. And it seems to take mere minutes for the dust to settle once again on that side table. The dirty work, truly, is never done. Still, there's no sensation quite like having a spotless home. After the tub has been scrubbed, you, too, feel like a sparkling version of yourself - calmer, healthier, cobweb-free. Because you'll always strive for that clean slate - even at the expense of fun and relaxation - you persevere through the stain-busting, the sanitizing, and the polishing. Real Simple Cleaning gives you a fresh start, breaking down the dirtiest jobs into clean-cut, manageable tasks. With room-by-room strategies for your space and methods for maintaining your stuff, the book guides you through what to do and when to do it, culminating in one cleaning calendar. All you have to do is stick to the schedule.

Thelma A. Meyer

When Thelma Meyer tells it to you, she tells it straight: Clean the kitchen daily! Don't waste anything (not even the water leftover from those potatoes you just boiled)! Always work hard! This philosophy meant that when Thelma's daughter Monica founded Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day products (named after her mom), the products were designed to work hard for you. Now for the first time, Thelma's sage advice is being made available in this revolutionary cleaning guide chock full of practical tips and secrets based on the premise that life is hectic and messy — and so keeping your house clean and nice is the only sensible thing to do.

We don't like to admit it, but most of us have way too much stuff in and around our houses. Look in your cabinets, closets, garage, attic or basement. They're probably a disorganized clutter, with items often not stored properly, which can damage them, create stress in locating what you need, even cause an unsafe situation. The first step in storing your stuff is to cut the clutter and organize it. Room by Room shows you what accessories are available at your local home improvement and online stores to help you reduce your organizing efforts and time. The possibilities are endless.
